Mercedes-Benz R107, C107
It is one of the first model of the German manufacturer with modern criteria wood trim; strongly dyed veneers to eliminate grain differences between one and the other. This system has been deployed in order to create a standard in wooden spare parts. The California Walnut burl is still available and the Zebrano makes its appearance. Another new element: the thick finish in polyester. This kind of finish, as already explained in the section “the pleasure of knowing” has for sure great advantages in production timing of wooden pieces, with characteristic behaviors and defects that appears as the time pass by. The woodwork of these cars is not particularly difficult, however, plastic elements, controls and switches are on the wood surface. This machining was carried out after finishing, with aid of cnc. During the restoration, it is impossible to replicate the factory procedure, it is necessary to perform the drilling and milling to pierce holes for controls, by hand with extreme precision, otherwise it will be necessary to redo the entire wood work. The detail makes the difference, because it is not just a matter of aesthetics, a switch placed in a hole too tight may not work.
